Blessing Through Abraham's Seed

Through Abraham's singular offspring, all nations on earth would be blessed.

Genesis 22:18

~1400 BCE

And through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me.

Manuscript Attestation

4QGen fragments; all codices.

Ancient Jewish Interpretation

Bemidbar Rabbah 2 applies this to the Messiah. The Talmud (Yevamot 63a) connects the blessing to messianic times.

Galatians 3:16

The promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. Scripture does not say "and to seeds," meaning many people, but "and to your seed," meaning one person, who is Christ.

Narrative Context

Paul argued that the singular "seed" pointed to one ultimate descendant through whom all nations would be blessed.

The covenant with Abraham is one of the most well-attested texts in ancient Judaism. Genesis manuscripts from Qumran confirm the text. The universal scope of the blessing ("all nations") was unusual in ancient Near Eastern religion and became foundational to both Jewish and Christian theology.
